Adjustment of Status
AOS) allows individuals already in the United States to apply for a Green Card without leaving the country. It’s the process of transitioning from a temporary (nonimmigrant) status to lawful permanent residency, available to those eligible through family, employment, or special immigrant categories.


Who Qualifies?
You may be eligible for AOS if you:
- Are physically present in the U.S.
- Entered the U.S. lawfully (usually with a visa or inspection)
- Have an approved immigrant petition (like Form 1-130 or 1-140)
- Have a visa number available in your category
- Are not inadmissible under immigration law (no serious violations, criminal issues, or health concerns)

Below is a non-exhaustive list of typical documents and requirements for an Adjustment of Status (AOS) application:
Form 1-485
Application to register permanent residence or adjust status.
Form 1-130 or 1-140
Petition establishing family or employment eligibility (If applicable).
Proof of Lawful Entry
1-94 record, visa stamp, or entry documentation.
Passport & Validity
Valid passport with biographical page and any prior U.S. visas.
Medical Examination (Form 1-695)
Completed and sealed by a USCIS-approved civil surgeon.
Proof of Relationship or Employment
Marriage certificate, job offer letter, or other qualifying evidence.
Financial Support (Form 1-864)
Affidavit of Support and most recent tax returns or pay stubs.
Government Fees And Photos
Correct filing fees and two U.S. passport -style photo.
Optional Supporting Documents
